This week's tally: 28.1
Not bad! I'm making a come back! I had a few milestones that were important!
One, I did pretty decent at the OC Half Marathon. Given I was coming off an injury, I wasn't expecting big results. However, I managed to keep an average, CONSISTENT, speed of 8:46 (including a bathroom break at mile 9). Not my best pace, but what was important is I never lost the cadence.... even at mile 11-13 where I expected the wheels to fall off.
Two, my recovery was pretty easy! After the race, I expected to wobble around with tight muscles. Again, my body hadn't done that type of mileage/speed in about a month. Not the case... I enjoyed my celebration beers that day and woke up Monday to run my slow recovery run, no problem! That means I didn't lose as much fitness as I was expecting! Yea! Huge win here.
Three, I reconnected with an ol' Snails Pace friend who's now a massage therapist. Admittedly, I have not been good about taking care of my body via deep tissue massages since Marisol left for Australia. It's hard to find someone new. I was Marisol's case study when she was getting her hours to become a Massage Therapist...back when I was completing my first marathon. She knows my body better than I do... and would call me out if I wasn't being good to it. So, the last year I've just been moping around and neglecting my body (no wonder I got injured). Last night I decided I couldn't push my luck with the race, so I tracked down Ernie at Massage Envy. Oh boy! That certainly wasn't fun! But I knew I needed it, bad!
Lastly, I'm pleased that I took this week easy. The general rule for recovery after a race is: for every mile you ran, you should recover a day. 13.1 miles = 13 days of recovery. As tempting as it was to hit the trail with my newly repaired legs, I decided to eat my pride and keep my speed about 2-3 minutes slower than what I raced at, and go no higher than 4 miles for my Homework Runs (weekday runs).
Today is a much deserved "Day Off". We also find out if we got into St George Marathon... cross your fingers.
Tomorrow we are scheduled for 8 miles to prepare for Fontucky Half (a.k.a. Fontana Half - where people go to get PRs).

Think today became an "off" day too. Way to enjoy recovery!
