Ankle Arthroscopy: I'm an Injured Runner
My current Google searches consist of:
Crap. I'm doing surgery.
It all started 3/8/14. LA Marathon. Life was good until Mile 17. At Mile 17 I hobbled over to the "Medical Tent" with significant pain in my ankle. After talking with a "doctor" in the tent, I stretched and, against his advice, rejoined the Race. And then, I continued to dodge in and out of Medical Tents until The Finishline.
LA Marathon is currently is my last Marathon.
Did I stop Running? No.
Figuring I was having a minor setback, I continued on with my Ragnar Relays, Xterras and Perfect Tens.
I mean, how could I stop? I Run because I like it. It's easy. I Run to control my weight. I Run to take the edge off. I Run to organize my thoughts. I Run for fun. I Run for Beer. I Run because a lot of my friends are Runners.
I hoped by ignoring the pain, it'd go away.
It didn't. In September, during the Disney Half Marathon I'd finally realized my ankle problem wasn't going away without professional help.
In February, after months of not Running and my ankle actually getting worst, I sought even more professional help.
3 Orthopedic Surgeons (including 2 different Ankle Specialists in Orange County) later... it all boils down to surgery.
In layman's terms my diagnosis:
In June, I'm scheduled for surgery. For approximately 2 weeks after I'll be parked on my parent's couch on pain medication. And for up to 4 weeks after that I'll be in a boot.
It's my first surgery and first cast. But hey, if I have a chance to get back to my passion, I'll do it.
My point in all this, I can't Run.
Also, pay attention to pain and seek professional help, early.

Hi Shan,
ReplyDeleteIf surgery will let you run again, then do it! You can manage the post-surgery pain and the rest on Mom & Dad's couch will present a time to reflect on what's important in life. When your health returns, you will remember that this "downtime" was time well spent.
Although we can't see you in June, we know that you'll make it through the surgery and be a superstar during phyical therapy. We love you so much!
